Santa Cruz Roller Derby Girls.

On Saturday, Joel and I got to go to our first roller derby. We got tickets because Sasha, my lovely friend who I dogsitt for occasionally. We got there only 10 minutes before the derby started and walked in to a tightly packed stadium, it was a sold out show. The civic center is not at all as big as HP Pavilion or the SJSU EventCenter, but it was a perfect fit for the event we were at. Christine and Marcus were there to hang out with us as well. The atmosphere was skewed in terms of race…it is Santa Cruz, so Joel, Marcus and I were the only dark people there, I found this amusing, not shocked, just amusing. Before the game started, they PR people read the proclamation, basically dedicating this civic center and renaming it the Santa Cruz Roller Derby Center.

The SCDG played against Santa Barbara’s Mission City team. At the beginning of the game, the awesome PR gave us a tutorial about how the game is played, for us newbies. It was easy enough to get the main gist, but the pace is fast so little things like skating out of bounds is hard to catch. I had no idea how fun derby races were to watch. It is a lot of falling and knocking around on the game floor, which is very entertaining to watch. And fellas, not only do you see woman get rough you can clearly see they have the smallest pair of shorts on, yup no joke. I know there isn’t padding under there so I’m sure they go home with a ton of bruises everywhere!

I must say toward the last 10 minutes of the game there was a lot of jammers (point making people) calling off the jam so it dragged, but we (I mean SCDG) won by 30 something points.

Afterwards, we all ate out at Clouds, a restaurant/club right down the streets. It was very yummy and the portions were huge. I couldn’t finish my burger. I love my friends, and eating and talking with them made the night close with a fantastic ending.
